With a couple of good fishing trips behind us and the weather holding we decided on yet another visit to the willow pond at Cefn Mably in Cardiff. The last time we was here we started on the pole and ended up on the pellet waggler so today we had set our minds to try something different. Myself, Trish, Brian & John had all decided on running cage feeder rigs was what was needed for this session but myself and John also decided to set up a float rod just in case the feeder method wasn't going to work.
It wasn’t a fast start to the morning as it took quite some time to get the swims going. Trish was the first to catch with a small common followed by a bream and closely behind was Brian with a couple of nice size Carp. The weather was slightly over cast and although there were signs of fish topping on the surface none of them were interested in floating baits.
I Noticed that the other fishermen around the lake seemed to struggle to get bites but after taking the time to keep feeding our swims little and often the fish kept on coming and we had plenty of bites. I decided on fishing a dog biscuit that had been soaked in salted peanut glug on a feeder rig on the bottom.
This spurred an immediate reaction and i was soon landing myself some quality size carp. John had decided to fish a float rod with a dog biscuit just of the surface but nothing was interested. All the time he was fishing he was also feeding up the margin just to his right.
He then changed tactics and fished a halibut pellet on a hair rig on a feeder set up and he fished it in close to the right margin where he had been feeding up all morning and straight away his rod ripped off into action and he was soon landing himself some tidy size fish. At one point I lost count on how many fish John actually lost when trying to play them in a little fast but he was having great fun catching fish after fish.
We all had a great days fishing at the willow and we all managed to try out different tactics as Brian and Trish switched between the feeder and the pole and were constantly landing fish and myself and John managed some feeder and waggler fishing and were also no stop landing fish all day long. It was at around 7 pm we decided the muscles in the arms would take no more punishment and called it a day. The willow pond is stocked with lots of good size quality carp and i would advise anyone if they are looking for an active days fishing then this is the pond to try.
