Welsh Carp Championship Qualifying Round 2016 - Cefn Mably Lakes

By Martyn Russ

Once again the weekend approached and it was time for the final qualifying round of the Welsh carp Championship 2016. This time the venue was Cefn Mably lakes in Cardiff and with good weather forecast for the entire weekend it looked to be a great 2 days of fishing. It was right from the off the action began with a couple of the pairs catching early and starting to build the important weights and with a large stock of carp in the main lake known as the Lodge Lake they were sure on target for a good bag of fish.
After the first 24 hours the results were:

Stuart Sparks & Sam Clarke 92lb 6oz
Daniel Powell & Anthony Rianant 81lb 1oz
Mike & Mitchel Merchant 75lb 10oz
Mark Thomson & David Thomson 13lb 8oz
I was quite surprised to see only 4 of the 5 teams managing to get onto the score board but as we know with fishing it was still any ones game as a good weight of fish can be built rapidly with some very high doubles coming out. The second part of the competition really started to heat up as all the teams started catching regular and were keeping the marshals very busy. All the teams were doing very well indeed apart from the last position who seemed to struggle to catch. The 3 top pairs were really piling on those weights with loads of stunning carp being caught and i have to admit its one of the biggest weights during a competition i have seen to date.
In the final Couple of Hours at Cefn Mabley Lakes the positions were

Stuart Sparks & Sam Clarke 311lb 5oz
Mike & Mitch Merchant 230lb 5oz
Daniel Powell & Anthony Rianant 203lb 15oz
Rion Mowells & Andrew Hinchcliff 69lb 14oz
Mark Thomson & David Thomson 13lb 8oz
All the competitors did extremely well and managed to get on the score board with a few or the teams really excelling themselves by catching a huge weight of fish. This years Welsh Carp Championship has been an amazing competition and all the competitors should be proud of themselves for getting so far and doing so well making it a competition second to none in Wales. The final is set to be one heck of a showdown with some of the best anglers Wales has to offer and i for one cant wait.
